Bogazici University Neighbourhood

Besiktas

One of the visitors of Bogazici (or Bosphorus) university admitted that this is one of the most beautiful campuses he had ever seen and that students who can spend their college years in this place are very fortunate. I will make one step further and say that once this university gets more exposure, it will be considered one of the best university locations around the world. Sitting on the green hill overlooking the Bosphorus strait (the narrow natural water way dividing Europe and Asia), right in the heart of one of the most beautiful and ancient cities of the world – Istanbul (known as Constantinople in the past), the university’s campus offers stunning views of Bosphorus with hundreds of ships and boats passing tirelessly day and night. Established in 1863, the main university’s campus filled with lovely buildings and covered by beautiful gardens. Not many university locations can claim this kind of heritage since history of its cosmopolitan neigbourhood goes centuries back to the Byzantine era.

The name of the city area “Besiktas” can be translated as “five stones” from Turkish. Some sources connect the name of the city area to the ancient port located here and supported by five massive pillars built by Hayreddin Pasha Barbarossa, a legendary Ottoman navy admiral (at first corsair and later influential state figure). His multiple victories secured the dominance of the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean for many years. Besiktas area is still considered a strategic city location with its large port and easy access to all key sites of Istanbul via the multiple means of affordable well-developed transportation system consisting of buses, metro, ferries, trams, bridges, taxis and even an underground tunnel build under the Bosphorus strait to connect the European and Asian sides of the city.

In the past several generations of Ottoman sultans and aristocracy started building their residencies in the area. The rich historical heritage of the city is worth exploring by visiting sites like Rumeli Hisari, Dolmabahce Palace, Ihlamur Pavilions, Ortakoy Mosque, mausoleum, and square of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha, and the Greek Orthodox church of archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Special attention requires the maritime museum located in the area with its large collection of ships and firearms from different periods of history, including the yacht of Ataturk himself! From other modern sites, we would like to emphasize Beshiktas Carsi, an area market, and Istanbul Sapphire, a skyscraper offering stunning views of the city from its 54th floor. The building includes the mall, residential area, restaurants, terraces, gardens, and even has a pool and a mini-golf course! The area is also home to one of the most loved Turkish soccer teams Besiktas, named after the city area and based in the modern Vodafone Arena stadium with more than 40,000 sits capacity that also happened to host the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

By the way, Besiktas has the highest concentration of universities and colleges in the city, so students from the area form a significant part of the Besiktas population. This part of the city known for its vibrant nightlife and a countless number of coffee shops, tea houses, kebab houses, kofte restaurants, bakeries and patisseries, seafood restaurants, and eateries of all types and sizes which offer an amazing variety of Turkish delicious dishes, snacks, desserts, and drinks. Many rooftop or waterfront restaurants of the area invite you to enjoy amazing views of the Bosphorus and Istanbul in addition to enjoying its culinary delights. According to the testimony of one of the Bogazici exchange students, “there are few better things on this earth than Saturday Turkish breakfast at the roof table at Kale Cafe with some friends.”

Besiktas is one of the oldest and prestigious areas of Istanbul that breaks down further into the smaller areas well known to locals like Bebek, Levent, Ortakoy, Kabatas, Arnavutkoy, and Etiler, which Bogazici university students should also consider while looking for accommodation due to its relative proximity to the campus. Most of them are prestigious and safe neighborhoods where most of the Istanbulites would probably prefer to live.

These residential areas along Bosphorus offer some amazing views and a long waterfront with everything it has to offer – long walks along Bosphorus, restaurants, coffee shops, access to the port and ferry station. Sometimes these locations along the Bosphorus are overlooked by students due to the hill that separates them from the university and the perceived difficulty of commuting to the university. However, this problem can be solved by taking the free university shuttle that leaves Bebek every morning at 9 am.*
