Istanbul Technical University Neighbourhood
Maslak
The Istanbul Technical University (ITU) is located in a modern-looking neighbourhood of the European side of Istanbul called Maslak. It is one of the business districts that belongs to the Saryer municipality and has been recently undergoing significant transformation. New residential complexes, shopping malls, hotels and commercial buildings have been rising here one after another and, therefore, significantly expending number of options for brand-new housing in the area. By the way, the Diamond of Istanbul, a tallest building in Turkey (63 floors when completed!) is set up to appear in Maslak as well. While the ITU is located further from the popular Istanbul sites and areas, it takes only about 25 minutes to reach Taksim by metro (and $1!) and even less by taxi (depending on traffic, of course). The area is also home to popular shopping malls Istinye Park and UNIQ Istanbul. The Istinye Park shopping mall is located in a very close proximity to the ITU. They offer everything you can possibly imagine in addition to the shopping experience: dining, art galleries, cinemas and theater, open green areas, art performances, residential space and even an adventure park and an ice-skating rink!
However, an impressive skyscrapers’ skyline is not the only feature of Maslak. Dating a few centuries back, the neighbourhood is home to prominent historical treasures hidden in the green forest of the area. The Maslak Pavilions complex, once a home to one of the latest sultans of the Ottonam Empire, Abdul Hamid II, consists of the Mabeyn-i-Humayin (Imperial Court), the Kasr-i-Humayun (Women Quarters), the Paşalar Dairesi, the Çadır Köşk, and the Lemonlok (Lemon Mention). The greenhouse located in the Lemonlok has collection of rare plants that were brough here from the different parts of the world. Some of the pavilions host restaurants on its premises and ready to provide you with a wonderful dining experience. Another place that is worth mentioning is the Elgiz Museum, a first private contemporary art museum in Turkey. The venue features the works of local and international artists and has a terrace. The Ural Ataman Classic Car museum of Maslak features cars made between 1926 and 1975 years. You can definitely find a plenty of interesting places to visit in Maslak, including even horse riding classes in the local Istanbul Equestrian Club! The first and only gastronomy museum of Turkey is located on the territory of the Mutfak Sanatları Akademisi (The Culinary Arts Academy). Its collection boasts about 2000 pieces beginning from the period of the Ottoman Empire till the middle of the twentieth century.
The area offers plenty of dining choices including coffee and tea houses similar to any area of Istanbul, a city famous for its culinary culture. The Rawsters Coffee & Supplu Co (42 Maslak, Ahi Evran Caddesi No.6, Maslak), a place offering specialty coffee, is only about 10 minutes away from the ITU campus. ExpressoLab coffeehouse is located on the territory of the ITU itself. Among the reputable restaurants of Maslak can be mentioned the Sanayi 313 (Maslak, Ataturk Oto Sanayi Sitesi, 2.Kisim-10. Sokak. No: 313, 10. Sk., 34398 Sarıyer/İstanbul, Turkey) and the Markus Prime Ribs Society (Maslak, Atatürk Oto Sanayi Sitesi No:3, 34485 Sarıyer).
